Bronkhorstspruit Food Poisoning Incident Sparks Community Outrage*
More than 21 children were rushed to the hospital after allegedly consuming food from a shop in Bronkhorstspruit, Gauteng, sparking widespread concern and outrage among community members. The shop in question has been accused of selling expired food products, prompting locals to take matters into their own hands and shut down the establishment.
The incident is the latest in a series of food poisoning cases reported in Gauteng, with the province recording 207 cases since February 2024, resulting in 10 deaths ¹. The Gauteng Department of Health has urged parents and caregivers to exercise extreme caution to ensure the safety of their children.
In a similar incident earlier this year, four children were hospitalized after consuming suspicious biscuits bought from a local spaza shop in Tsakane ². Unfortunately, one child aged six died after vomiting in class.
The Gauteng Department of Health has called on parents and guardians to take greater responsibility by educating their children to be careful about what they consume. "The whole of society needs to play an active role in this area, including discouraging illegal dumping, which also poses a threat to human health, leading to various diseases and illnesses," said Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko ¹.
*Prevention Measures
- *Check Expiry Dates*: Always check the expiry dates of food products before purchasing.
- *Proper Food Handling*: Ensure food is handled and stored properly.
- *Hand Hygiene*: Wash hands before handling food.
By taking these precautions and remaining vigilant, we can work together to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of our children.
