Mebala is a Botswana-based fashion brand that celebrates African storytelling, versatility, and creativity. Their designs reflect not just the stunning natural landscapes, array of cultures, and traditions, but also the need for sustainability, durability, and functionality. Mebala has expanded beyond just backpacks and now designs and produces everything from tote bags, clutches, and wallets to satchels, duffels, and computer bags. 

Their products are popular not just in Botswana or Africa, but are exported to multiple continents. African solutions that leverage African opportunities are being celebrated globally, and Mebala is a testament to that. They have been featured on several African and European TV networks, including Africa News, Trace TV, and France 24. And now, they are coming to a screen near you! 

Mebala sat down with Afrimaxx to discuss their process, designs, challenges, and, most importantly, their vision. What makes Mebala stand out is their focus on understanding what the customer wants and designing products accordingly. According to Tlhalefang Moeletsi, "We design for functionality, versatility, and timelessness. We design products made for travelers, students, and anyone that appreciates a good bag."

Mebala's designs are not just aesthetically pleasing, but also offer practicality. The backpacks are designed with anti-theft locks, water-resistant materials, and convenient pockets and compartments. Additionally, they use locally sourced eco-friendly materials to ensure sustainability and support their community wherever possible.

But with success comes challenges. COVID-19 has posed some significant issues for Mebala in terms of production and distribution. However, the team did not let these hurdles dim their vision. Instead, they turned to e-commerce to reach a wider audience and continue to grow their brand. 

Mebala is a prime example of how African solutions can leverage African opportunities and that a simple idea can have a significant impact on society. From a backpack to a global brand, Mebala is setting a new standard in fashion while still holding on to African values, traditions, and culture.
