Banyana Banyana coach is in hot Waters'
Banyana Banyana lost their opening match 2-1 to Sweden despite a promising first half performance. They followed it up with a 2-2 draw with Argentina.
The team's inability to defend goals and the seeming lack of tactical discipline has left supporters frustrated and calling for a change in leadership.
Coach Desiree Ellis, who played for the national team herself during her playing days, was appointed in February 2018 and led the team to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in their history.
However, her tactics and team selections have come under scrutiny especially in the loss to China where the team failed to mount any meaningful attack and appeared bereft of ideas going forward.
South Africa's football governing body, SAFA, has however given its support to the coach despite the poor form of the team.
The team's captain, Janine van Wyk, has also pleaded for patience from fans and admitted that the team was underperforming.
Banyana Banyana still have a chance to progress to the knockout stage of the tournament if they beat Italy in their final group match and hope other results go their way.
However, the pressure is mounting on coach Ellis and it remains to be seen if she will resign or be sacked following the tournament.
South Africa's women's team has made remarkable progress in recent years and there is a growing pool of talented players. The team's disappointing showing at the World Cup will be seen as a setback, but one they can learn from and improve upon.
